Skills

My background as an astronomer and university professor has given me a broad range of research, management, and communication skills.

  • Data analysis, statistical modeling, graphical data presentation, experimental design
  • IDL, python, shell scripting, excel, databases
  • Grant proposals and management
  • Teaching, speaking, and writing for general and scientific audiences
  • Development and implementation of best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Mentoring students (academic, research, and personal) from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds

Recent Projects

Here's some fun things I've accomplished:

Discovery of a binary planetary system

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we recently published the discovery of Oph 98 AB, a very young (3 million year) system which includes objects with masses of 15 and 8 times that of Jupiter. The gravity holding this system together is weaker than any other known system, making Oph 98 a unique test for formation and evolution theories.

  • The first measurement of windspeed on a brown dwarf

We compared measurements of the rotation speed of a brown dwarf at radio and infrared wavelengths to measure a whopping windspeed of 650 m/s (or 1425 mph)! Our observations with the Very Large Array and NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope verified that this technique can work to measure atmospheric winds not only on brown dwarfs, but also on extrasolar planets in the future.
